Asking for Help!

Asking for help.  One of the hardest things for humans to do.  I’m guilty just like everyone else.  I hesitate…I think “I’ll just keep working on it”…I have this magical thought that “It’ll just get better.”  And to be fair, it does get better…but it often takes such an inordinate amount of time!

It’s such a conundrum – asking for help is hard yet most things get easier when we reach out.  Having a guide straighten the path a bit makes the process more straight-forward & efficient.  This is why I’m highlighting Laura Widenor.  She made the tough decision, after years of self-coaching, to become a coached athlete.  She could easily have stayed in her comfort zone of “I’ve always done it this way & it’s always worked.”  But she recognized that she needed a different outcome – a potentially much better outcome.  And that requires getting uncomfortable.  Great job to you, Laura!  We are going to have so much fun!

In Laura’s own words:

“I got divorced & moved to Boise in Sept 2021.  I thought I might never do another triathlon because it was ‘our thing’, not ‘my thing’.  Also, here in Boise, I found an amazing community of runners who further shifted my focus away from swimming & biking.

But then, this Fall, two running buddies talked me into signing up for Ironman 70.3 Oregon!  I’ve never done a complete half-distance tri (my 1st attempt had the swim canceled).  To start preparing I joined Swim Training workouts & got back on my bike.  But all the same questions came back about whether I was training right.  Plus, now that I am older, I am more interested in how to train so that I can keep going for the long term.

Coach Michelle reached out when she noticed how tired I was at one of the swim workouts.  We talked through a few changes to my current training plan which made a lot of sense.  And…I decided to become a coached athlete!  Now, with a revised training program created just for me, I am super excited to learn more & I now have confidence that I am training right!  Bring it on!”
