Doing What’s Necessary for Progress

Some athletes are a coach’s dream…and some aren’t.  The dream ones are those who really embrace the process, ask probing questions, dig into the details & commit to the necessary work.  These are the athletes who don’t expect linear growth, don’t get derailed when their progress plateaus & don’t look for quick fixes.  They are simply doing what’s necessary for progress.  They do their work day in & day out & revel in the small changes that inevitably come their way.  Colleen Kelly is one of these athletes!  She’s at the pool practicing her skills & drills so regularly that I get worried when she’s not there.  And her persistence pays off in the a-ha moments that she is more frequently experiencing.  Way to go, Colleen!!  😊

In Colleen’s own words:

“A wise friend once relayed the following phrase to me:  ‘Understand simple things deeply’ (Burger & Starbird, 2012).

This axiom applies to my experience with learning to swim.  The more I practice the fundamental concepts – balance, alignment, timing, hydrodynamics, propulsion & purposeful exaggeration (doing these skills both correctly AND incorrectly) – the better I am able to troubleshoot & self-correct my technique.

For these reasons I love practicing my swim drills!  They are so effective for training my mental focus, technique & proprioception.  With each practice, the distinction between drilling & swimming decreases which helps me feel more & more how these two pieces directly connect!”
