Why are we so resistant to change?

  • Comfort w/ Known
    • Habits, routines, traditions create stability
    • Stability = comfort
    • Comfort comes from…
      • Can predict outcome based on years of experience
      • Requires less energy – less thinking, less focus…autopilot
  • Fear of Unknown
    • Changing habits, routines, etc creates instability
    • Instability = discomfort
    • Discomfort comes from…
      • Have little to no experience w/ new way…can’t predict outcome
      • Requires much more energy = more thought, more focus to resist slipping back into old ways
    • Can incorrectly assume that outcome will be negative

What I learned from my daughter

  • We often know what we need to change
    • Just need to trust our instincts
  • “Changing” (the process of change) is the most difficult
    • We often know what we need to change…it’s just doing it that is difficult
  • Outcome is often positive rather than negative
    • Trust that it will be better in the end
