What Makes an Athlete “Coachable”?

Being “coachable” is one of those traits that we coaches look for.  It’s funny because you’d think that any athlete asking for help would be coachable.  If only that were true!!  So, what exactly makes an athlete “coachable”?

What makes an athlete “coachable” is their ability to accept the methodology being presented, to ask questions focused on improving their understanding, and finally to do the prescribed work to the best of their ability.  It’s a tall order…but it certainly streamlines an athlete’s progress!

This is why I’m highlighting Dominic Hulsey!  He has been so patient, so inquisitive, so trusting, so coachable!  And what do you know…he’s turning into a wonderful swimmer!  Way to go, Dom!

In Dominic’s own words:

“I always try my best to be coachable in whatever I do.  Being a lifelong athlete & a former college basketball player has helped me grow a lot in that area.

After college, I started training for triathlons as a way to stay healthy & in shape.  But…I always dreaded my swim sessions.  I never learned proper technique & therefore I’ve never been a strong swimmer.

Since I started swim lessons with Coach Michelle, my confidence in the water has grown!  I appreciate having drills to work on that are specifically geared towards my areas of need.

I am now confident that on race day – Ironman 70.3 Washington Tri-Cities – the swim will be so much more enjoyable!”
