Most naan recipes take hours…even days. But not this one! In just 2-3 hours you can have pillowy, chewy, tasty homemade naan. Incorporate any ingredients you like – I chose onions & garlic. It’s that easy!
Ingredients
- 3/4 c milk
- 2-1/4 t (1 envelope) active dry yeast
- 1 t sugar
- 3-1/2 c flour
- 1 t salt
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, finely chopped
- 1 c whole-milk yogurt (not Greek)
- 2 T oil
Heat milk in a small saucepan or in microwave to 100 deg (I heat it until I can just barely feel it when I stick my finger in). Whisk in yeast & sugar. Let stand until foamy, about 10 min.
Whisk 3-1/2 c flour & 1 t salt in a large bowl. Add yeast mixture, onion, garlic, yogurt & 2 T oil & mix.
Knead dough, adding more flour as needed, until a smooth, but sticky dough forms, about 5 min. Lightly grease another large bowl, place dough in bowl, & turn to coat. Cover & let rise in a warm, draft-free place until doubled in size, about 1-2 hrs.
Punch down & divide into 10 pieces. Using floured hands, roll each piece into a ball. Cover balls & let rest 10 min.
Heat a large cast-iron or heavy skillet over medium-high heat. Working with 1 piece at a time, stretch dough with your hands (or roll with a rolling pin) out to 1/8″ thickness. Cook until lightly blistered, puffed & cooked through, about 2 min per side. Wrap in foil to keep warm until ready to serve.
