Why are we so resistant to change?
- Comfort w/ Known
- Habits, routines, traditions create stability
- Stability = comfort
- Comfort comes from…
- Can predict outcome based on years of experience
- Requires less energy – less thinking, less focus…autopilot
- Fear of Unknown
- Changing habits, routines, etc creates instability
- Instability = discomfort
- Discomfort comes from…
- Have little to no experience w/ new way…can’t predict outcome
- Requires much more energy = more thought, more focus to resist slipping back into old ways
- Can incorrectly assume that outcome will be negative
What I learned from my daughter
- We often know what we need to change
- Just need to trust our instincts
- “Changing” (the process of change) is the most difficult
- We often know what we need to change…it’s just doing it that is difficult
Outcome is often positive rather than negative- Trust that it will be better in the end
