Finishing What You Started

Here’s a question for you:  How many times have you tried to learn something?  Once, twice, three times?  More?  My guess is that “once” is the answer most of us would give.  Maybe it’s time to consider finishing what you started!

It’s really common to give something the good ol’ college try…find out that it’s more complicated, more time-consuming, more difficult than we originally thought…and then let it go.  I’ve done it.  Back in 2021 I took singing lessons for all of 6 months before I got frustrated & irritated at my lack of skill.  Have I restarted singing lessons since then?  Unfortunately, I have to answer No.

This is why I’m so proud of Dave Morrison.  He’s come back around – after 20 yrs – to take lessons a 2nd time!  He’s fully accepting the concept that it takes months, years & many revisitations of the same concepts before our bodies & minds REALLY get it.  The cool part is that learning the 2nd, 3rd or 4th time around comes faster & better (when compared to the 1st time!).  Congrats, Dave!  Your progress has been so fun to watch!

In Dave’s own words:

“I took my 1st swim lesson from Coach Michelle 20 yrs ago so that I could muddle through my 1st Half Ironman event   Although those initial lessons were enough to take me from the ‘non-freestyle swimmer’ category to the ‘proficient enough to complete the event’ category, I really wasn’t comfortable in the water.  Instead of spending more time focused on improving my technique, I chose to muscle my way through every triathlon I participated in thereafter.

I can’t say what made me decide October 2023 was the time to get back into the water, but I knew my days of muscling through anything were long gone.  So now I’ve done what I should have done all those years ago – I signed up for more lessons.  And I will say that I’ve been amazed at how well this 2nd round of lessons is going!

Since I already had exposure to the basics, I’ve been able to focus my attention on refining existing skills as well as incorporating new skills that I wasn’t able to pay attention to the first time around.  After only a few lessons I can already see a dramatic improvement.

I don’t know if another triathlon is in the cards, but now the swimming leg certainly won’t be what keeps me from signing up!”
