“Getting into Your ‘Exploration Bubble'” by Coach Michelle

Attention all Type A‘s & Perfectionists out there.  This article is for you!  For many of us (yes…I identify with both as well) our hyperfocus on doing things “right” can be such a limiter when it comes to learning new things.  Firstly, we procrastinate asking for help.  (Does this sound familiar?  “Before I get coaching, I need to ‘learn the basics’…’get in better shape’…’just do the work I know I need to do.'”)  Secondly, we don’t want to look silly, weak, not on top of things (we want to be perfect!), so we enter into the learning process with unrealistic expectations & a whole lot of personal pressure & stress.  But, since one of the keys to successful learning is making mistakes, getting into your “exploration bubble” might be just the solution for you…and me!

What’s an “Exploration Bubble”?

Recently one of my clients introduced me to the concept of an “exploration bubble”.  We were working on a new swim technique & she said (before she tried it) that she was “in her exploration bubble.”  I asked her to explain.  Basically, going into your exploration bubble allows you to experiment without expectation & pressure to execute.  When you’re in your bubble you are free to explore how different movement patterns feel without any judgement as to whether or not they are “right or wrong”.  Furthermore, because you are exploring, the expectation is on being free to try lots of different ways to see how they work rather than being restricted to doing one perfect movement.  Beautiful…truly beautiful.

What Happens in Your Exploration Bubble?

I love the concept of an exploration bubble on so many levels.  To me, if it helps us minimize tension & stress so we are able to learn more completely…it has to be good!  Based on my clients’ feedback, being in your exploration bubble…

  1. Acknowledges that the learning process is messy & full of mistakes & glitches.
  2. Minimizes black & white terms like “right” & “wrong”.
  3. Increases comfort with the grayness, the imperfection of learning.
  4. Heightens sensations of “fun”& “joy” which turns learning into something more like playing…less stressful & more relaxed.  (For a great article on this concept, check out Antonio Gonzalez’ “Train Like a Kid” post.)

So, my Type A friends!  When you’re challenged with learning something new, step into your Exploration Bubble & delight in the chaotic, convoluted & disorganized process that is learning!  I can’t wait to hear how it goes!

Happy Training!
