Moving On After Achieving a Big Goal

What do you do after a big goal has been reached?  Moving on after achieving a big goal can be a very difficult thing to do.  People often go 1 of 2 ways:

  1. They lose all motivation & just stop….stop everything.
  2. They pick a new goal that is BIGGER than the previous one.

But there’s a 3rd option.  And that is to continue to do…with no need to prove anything to anyone.

Jette Jensen took that 3rd option.  After 2 yrs of Ironman training, she scaled back to a very achievable goal.  She doesn’t feel obligated to overreach & she’s satisfied with doing what makes her happy!  Way to go, Jette!

In Jette’s own words:

“Training for an Ironman (IM) triathlon is a big commitment.  I know because I spent 2 yrs training for one.  During my 1st training year, my race (Ironman California) was disappointingly cancelled…on race day.  I knew that I really wanted to complete this race, so after taking a couple months’ break, I resumed training & successfully crossed the finish line in 2022.

During my 2nd yr of training, I was a little nervous about staying motivated.  But my primary goal was so clear (complete my Ironman!) that I was able to stay focused & on track.  Training was my 1st priority and, because each day is only 24hrs long, I had to say no to many other things in life.

After I reached my IM goal, it was time to regroup.  What would my next goal be?  Oftentimes we feel like the next goal needs to be bigger.  Thankfully, I didn’t feel that way – I really don’t need to do another IM right now!

After 2 yrs of spending all my waking hours training or working, I decided that this year’s goal is Balance.  I’m ready for a more ‘normal’ lifestyle where I can hang out with people other than my ‘workout friends’.  I’m ready to spend more time with my family.  I’m ready to travel…and not just to a race!

This year I’m training for Ironman 70.3 Oregon & my goal is to have fun – fun while training & racing.  I don’t have a time goal…I just want to cheer on the other athletes I meet along the way.  I also hope that I can inspire others to do tri’s because it’s a great sport & the community is so welcoming!”
