Need an Event to Work on Your Technique? Nope!

When folks finally decide to get technique help, the usual reason is that they have an event or race that they’re getting ready for.  But there’s another reason…one not so commonly used:  Just Because.  If you think you need an event or race to work on your technique, think again.  No race?  No problem!

I LOVE working with Just Because’rs!  These folks are usually in it for the long haul & tend to find lots of joy in each small change or adjustment.  It’s the mindset.  Because they DON’T have a timeframe or a specific goal, they are more willing to let the improvements come to them rather than rushing to find those improvements.  And while their learning process might take longer, I truly believe the depth & quality of their learning is SO much greater.

Colleen Cronin is one of my Just Because clients.  Way to go, Colleen!  I love your approach!

In Colleen’s own words:

“About 6 mo’s ago, I signed up for swim lessons with a child-like curiosity.  I simply wanted to enjoy swimming as a form of exercise without necessarily having a concrete goal or deadline.  I just wanted to ‘get better’…which can sometimes be looked down upon in our uber-productive, get-ahead culture.

So, what has happened?  In each lesson I’m learning new dimensions of both Breaststroke & Freestyle.  I love seeing how a tweak of my arm, head, breath or kick changes my hydrodynamics.  And I get excited when those changes translate to swimming longer, faster & farther with less energy!

I’m also tackling non-stroke swim skills like those fancy flip turns that veteran swimmers do.  I want to learn these because they look challenging, fast…and most of all, fun!

There may or may not be a swimming distance challenge in my future.  But for now, I’m happy in my place of continuous improvement.  I practice, keep practicing…and watch that practice pay off.  The days that I swim are almost always better than the days I don’t & that’s all the reward & motivation I need to keep returning to the pool!”
