Swimming “Slow” to Swim Faster

An Outline from Coach Michelle’s recent Facebook Live Video.

Water is an unfamiliar environment

  • Our perceptions in water are often wrong
  • Working hard does not necessarily mean going faster
  • Doing more often means we go slower

Drag – Our #1 Enemy

  • We tend to forget about it
  • 3 types of drag
    • Pressure or form – the shape of the swimmer 50%
    • Friction – the surface characteristics 25%
    • Surface or wave – where the swimmer breaks the surface 25%
  • Drag forces increase as speed increases

Reduce Drag…You Go Faster

  • Stay hydrodynamic as much as possible…this is efficient swimming
  • Keep extremities in “your tube”
  • Do less w/ arms & legs…more w/ core

How to Evaluate Efficiency

  • Count strokes
  • Ex.  Swimmer went from 28 strokes to 24 strokes.  Got 04 sec faster.
