An Outline from Coach Michelle’s recent Facebook Live Video.
Water is an unfamiliar environment
- Our perceptions in water are often wrong
- Working hard does not necessarily mean going faster
- Doing more often means we go slower
Drag – Our #1 Enemy
- We tend to forget about it
- 3 types of drag
- Pressure or form – the shape of the swimmer 50%
- Friction – the surface characteristics 25%
- Surface or wave – where the swimmer breaks the surface 25%
- Drag forces increase as speed increases
Reduce Drag…You Go Faster
- Stay hydrodynamic as much as possible…this is efficient swimming
- Keep extremities in “your tube”
- Do less w/ arms & legs…more w/ core
How to Evaluate Efficiency
- Count strokes
- Ex. Swimmer went from 28 strokes to 24 strokes. Got 04 sec faster.
