Toni Osmundson’s Homemade Sunscreen

As the weather warms up we start gearing up for poolside hangouts, outdoor exercise, boating days & lots of sun. Unfortunately, sun time isn’t always great for our skin & we do need some protection against the harsh rays.

A study done by the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) suggests that the chemicals in sunscreens can be absorbed through the skin & may enter your blood stream.

So instead of reaching for the over-the-counter sunscreen, here’s a great non-toxic alternative that you can make in less than 10 minutes at home. AND, in the long run, it’s more affordable.

I love this recipe because it is infused with essential oils for added benefit.

  • Carrot Seed Oil has a natural SPF of 38-40
  • Zinc Oxide a mineral that sits on top of the skin, scattering, reflecting, & absorbing UVA & UVB rays.
  • Shea Butter & Coconut Oil both are anti-inflammatory & help sooth & soften the skin.
  • Frankincense, Lavender, & Hawaiian Sandalwood all have soothing properties for the skin.

Ingredients

  • 1/4 c coconut oil
  • 1/4 c Shea butter
  • 1 t carrot seed oil
  • 2 T zinc oxide
  • 2-3 drops Hawaiian Sandalwood oil
  • 2-3 drops Lavender
  • 2-3 drops Frankincense

Melt coconut oil & Shea butter in a bowl over warm water. Add carrot seed oil & zinc oxide & mix together in a container. Add the essential oils & stir. Place in a glass jar for storage. Allow to cool for 30 minutes in fridge.
