Reasons:

  • Wearing properly fitting helmet can prevent 85% of cyclist’ head injuries

Safety Standards:

  • SPSC sticker – Consumer Product Safety Commission approved
  • MIPS – Multidirectional Impact Protection System
    • Reduces brain injury from rotational force crashes

Types:

  • Road
    • Lots of vents for air flow
    • Light weight & aerodynamic
    • No visor
  • Mountain
    • Less venting
    • More coverage on sides & back of head
    • Built-in visor

To Fit/Adjust:

  • Get correct size – based on head size
  • Low, Level & Snug
    • Sits low on forehead & level
    • Adjust all straps/retention systems until helmet is snug
      • Shouldn’t move than 1” in any direction
      • Side straps should connect just below ear
      • No more than 1 finger between chin strap & chin

When to Replace:

  • After a crash or heavy impact
  • Anything w/ Styrofoam liner
  • Faded…UV degradation
  • Don’t buy “used”!!
