Working Out vs Training. What’s the Difference?

Working Out

  • Exercise for the effect(s) that it produces right now
    o Relaxation, better health, burning calories
    o Might look the same each time as long as desired
    effect is achieved

Training

  • Exercise for the purposes of achieving a long(er) term goal
  • The process rather than the workouts themselves
  • Requires planning, structure because desired results are not
    immediate

Pluses & Negatives

Pluses

  • Exercise – Necessary…we need this for good health & wellbeing
  • Training – Most effective way to achieve longer term goals

Negatives

  • Exercise – Can lose motivation, focus, drive
  • Training – More rigid, less “fun”

Applying “Exercise” Principles to Training

  • This is easy. Training requires exercise!
  • Can also enjoy immediate exercise benefits while focusing
    on longer term goal

Applying “Training” Principles to Exercise

  • Create longer term goals to keep you motivated
  • The variation, change will increase the results of exercise
  • How to:

o Pick a timeframe – 1mo, 3mo, 6mo, 1yr, 4yrs
o Pick an aspect of fitness & focus on it for chosen
amount of time
o Use periodization model

o Track it
